Stories of Success: Triumph Over Tragedy

Kaitlyn Wade’s life was forever changed on a fateful day when tragedy struck. Following a routine outing with a friend, their car was violently hit by a drunk driver who was a repeat offender. Suffering from near fatal injuries including massive head trauma, Kaitlyn spent months in ICU struggling to survive.

“I knew she was going to make it. The doctors who were telling me otherwise did not know my Kaitlyn, whose strong will to live had carried her through leukemia when she was three. I trusted her inner strength would carry her through this as well. Our family’s faith and the prayers and support of relatives and friends enabled us to take it one day at a time,” said Kay Wade, Kaitlyn’s mother.

Often those who suffer from traumatic brain injuries experience difficulties with memory and learning. Unfortunately, Kaitlyn was no exception.

Prior to her release from the hospital, Kay and her husband Jim met with the public school for a special education ARD meeting. “What they told us was hopeless. They did not have the programs or the resources for Kaitlyn to become a functioning student. They just would not have been able to spend the time with her to meet her needs,” Kay continued.

“We had heard about Key School from friends whose children had attended and were also referred by the hospital staff. Then we met with Ms. Key and knew that Key School was the right place or Kaitlyn. I truly believe that she would not be where she is today had it not been for coming to this amazing school.”

Kaitlyn is now a proud member of Key School’s class of 2012.

Kay added, “Kaitlyn had to have the individualized curriculum and attention she has received. I don’t know of any other school who provides such a structured program that is so focused on each child. It has been a life saver and I can’t say that enough.”

“I think there are so many students and families who could benefit from this school,” said Kay. “Key School changes lives. Kaitlyn proves it!”
